Asterix and Obelix have freed Boneywasawarriorwayayix, prisoner of the Romans, and they accompany him back to Corsica to see how his compatriots also resist the Roman invaders. In the ship that takes them across the Mediterranean, the chief of the Corsican clan cuts into a visibly fresh cheese, when suddenly, by dint of the redoubtable smell of its fermentation, he smells the sweet essence of his island.
If René Goscinny is unmatched when it comes to depicting identities and skilfully playing with stereotypes, Albert Uderzo also displays his indomitable skills. Among them is his gift for bringing the senses alive through drawing, capable of making us smell and feel textures, to the point of making the reader salivate in front of a roast boar or a sliced apple… Or, as here, suggesting a most powerful aroma and flavour.
