Whosemoralsarelastix

Asterix and the Cauldron
Prepublication in the comic magazine Pilote between 1968 and 1969
Original publication 1969 – Plate 41

In the final stage of the “cauldron” expedition, Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix come upon the charming and spectacular village of Chief Whosemoralsarelastix. The smoke escaping from each chimney contributes to the image of a warm and comfortable home. This village contrasts sharply with that of the indomitable Gauls, nestled on the seashore. Here it is placed proudly on top of a cliff, as if stretched between the blue sky and the sea’s horizon.

Ever playing off the background with the foreground, the setting of the action is achieved through the relationship of scale with the characters, which contributes to bringing the place to life.
